Stainless products for structural and miscellaneous needs.
Matterplay fabricates stainless built-up beams, channels, HSS, angles and WT from ASTM A240 plate, machine welded per AWS D1.6 and finished per ASTM A380. Every member is traceable by heat number and ships with certified reports for structural and miscellaneous uses.

Our standard
“Each beam is fabricated from ASTM A240 stainless plate, welded per AWS D1.6, fully traceable by heat number, and delivered with certified reports to show structural strength and straightness.”
ASTM A240
Plate specification: chromium and chromium-nickel stainless.
AWS D1.6
Structural welding code for stainless steel.
Heat-number traceable
Every plate carries its mill heat; the MTR follows the member.
Tested
Structural performance and straightness certified by Matterplay.
How plates become a beam
W beams that are not produced by the hot-rolled mill are made from three plates, built up and welded together.
1
Heat number on
The heat number is transferred to the plates we cut.
2
Cut
Cut to appropriate size.
3
Fit up
Flanges and web are squared and clamped on the fit table.
4
Machine welded
Continuous fillet welds at each flange-to-web junction, to AWS D1.6 stainless requirements.
5
Finish
Per ASTM A380.
6
Inspect and ship
Product inspected and shipped with Inspection Certificates.
Common questions from engineers
The twelve questions engineers put to us first. One answer each.
Is the fillet weld in these beams as strong as a full-pen or laser-fused weld?
Yes.
A fillet weld can have equal or greater strength than a full-pen or laser-fused weld.
What standard is it manufactured to?
Industry standard.
ASTM A240 plate, welded per AWS D1.6, straightness per ASTM A6 tolerances, finished in accordance with ASTM A380.
Is it a rolled shape or a built-up shape?
Built-up.
Beams: three plates, fillet-welded. WT: two plates, fillet-welded. HSS: two bent plates, welded together. Channels and angles: bent plate.
Is there engineering that supports strength standards?
Yes.
Calculations can be provided on area, moment of inertia, elastic and plastic section moduli, torsional constant and radius of gyration.
Do you have weld qualification records?
Yes.
WPS, PQR and welder qualifications.
Can I substitute this for laser-fused beams?
Yes.
Engineers and owners have approved these fabrications several times before; we help with the documentation so approval does not delay the project.
What’s the cost difference?
30–45% less.
Compared with laser-fused beams.
Can you make custom lengths and dimensions?
Yes.
Standard sections, cut to the lengths and dimensions you need.
Has this been used before?
Many times.
Specified, approved and installed on real projects.
What code recognizes this beam?
Four standards.
Plate per ASTM A240. Welds per AWS D1.6. Straightness per ASTM A6. Finish per ASTM A380.
What are your straightness tolerances?
ASTM A6.
They will come to you straight and squared.
What’s the difference between these products and laser-fused products?
More economical.
Cost-effective and budget-friendly.
Comparable in performance: our structural fillet-welded beam demonstrates equivalent strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and quality control through testing.
The structural engineering community already accepts welded built-up members.
Fillet weld vs. full-pen / laser-fused
A fillet weld can be just as strong or stronger than a full-pen or laser-fused weld.
Every beam we build has a continuous fillet weld on each side of the web, at every flange-to-web junction.

Build better. Build smarter. More affordable.
A Matterplay fillet-welded built-up member provides equal straightness and finish and equal or greater strength, at lower cost.
